780 Third Avenue
New York, New York
Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
Owner: Cadillac-Fairview Urban Development Inc.
Recipient of the Concrete Industry Board's Prestigious Annual Award

The world's First diagonally-braced tube structure designed and constructed in concrete, 780 Third Avenue has an 8.1:1 aspect ratio which, in fact, dictated its structural design. The structural system for this 50-story, 570-ft. tall building is a concrete tube consisting of closely spaced perimeter columns connected to each other by diagonal bracing. The bracings are formed by infilling window openings at staggered locations. The building was completed in 1983.

The Concrete Alliance originated from the idea that the public will have a voice in demanding reinforced cast-in-place concrete as the material of a safer choice.

The goal of the Concrete Alliance is to educate politicians, developers, architects, engineers, insurers, and the general public about the safety benefits that a cast-in-place reinforced concrete building offers.
