How do you build a VERTICAL railroad tie retaining wall?

I’m looking to build a vertical railroad tie retaining wall on each side of our driveway in the bar ditch, and am not entirely sure exactly how to go about it. How would you attach the railroad ties together? Do I need a cement base? An overall explanation of how you build a vertical railroad tie retaining wall would be perfect.
