What do the 7 and the 4 in the equation for masonry stand for?

I have just recently learned a little bit about masonry in my math class and they gave an equation for how many bricks you will need, and part of it consists of 7 x (thickness) / 4. I would like to know what the 7 and the 4 are for.

They appear to be constants! Perhaps to do with the length and width of the bricks.
