A retaining wall holding 80 acres of flyash failed at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston coal-fired power plant early monday morning. 2.6 million cubic yards of fly ash were released and covered 250 to 400 acres with four to six feet of ash. Eleven homes were damaged and evacuated. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Does the distance of water behind a retaining wall affect the total sliding force?
The sliding force of a 10ft high wall retaining water is 62.4 x 10 x 10 /2 =3120 lbs. If the distance of water behind the wall is only 1 foot, what would be the total sliding force on the wall?
Yes it does.
What are the basic factors involved in building a ‘retaining’ wall prior to building a house?
Hi…
Building a house on a slope and am required to build a retaining wall (house is split level) – I am at the early stages and curious as to whether there are any specific features of retaining walls to understand – materials, style of custruction, etc…
Any help information would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Retaining walls are unique and each situation requires something different. Most landscapers install retaining walls, and even engineers can get involved.
The basics: If the soil surcharge load is minimized, not a large sustained slope, put up a string line to make sure the wall is straight. Then clear and level an area about 2 feet wide and however long the wall. Put down crusher run (modified or stone dust as a base). Make sure this is level. Then begin laying the block per the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are on a curve, that requires a little more work. Some blocks may have to be nipped. The most important aspect is to put a drainage pipe behind the wall. It must be a perforated pipe with the holes in the pipe placed down on the ground. Put some 2B stone over the pipe and cover everything with landscapers cloth. It lets the water through, but not the dirt. Then fill in behind the wall with some 2B stone, and then the rest with soil. The stone allows proper drainage for the water.
If you are trying to hold up a large slope, then you must tier the wall to break up the surcharge load of the soil. You can be very creative in doing this and it leads to a pleasing look when done creatively.
Also, you can find some great examples on the inet with complete instructions. The main thing is to remove the water.
Good Luck.

We have a 10 ft drainage / utility easement that runs the length of our back fence. My husband would like a build a retaining wall at 8 ft to bring the rest of the yard level. Are we allowed to build that type of structure in an easement?
There are retaining walls installed by the builder that run along both sides of the property and into the easement.
you can but if the city/county needs to do something to the easement, then they are going to tear down your wall

What trailing plants can I plant on top of a retaining wall that will bloom all summer in Zone 7?
I want to cover a 4 foot retaining wall with colorful trailing plants that will bloom all or most of the summer. I live in the Pacific Northwest, Zone 6 – 7. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
A tiny pink creeping rose called ‘pinkie’ or bigger ‘new dawn’ would be great for that climate. You can also grow creeping thyme which will give you a sea of cascading crimson flowers. Clematis huvi has beautiful purple blooms. My favourite (which I’d love to grow, but can’t because it’s too hot here) is Wisteria Amethyst Falls. The most adorable flower, Creeping Flox, Apple blossom will take your breath away (actually, any of the flox are gorgeous). It’s in the first link that I provided.
