Message from the President

The Concrete Alliance website originated from the idea that the public will now have a voice to demand concrete as the material of a safer choice. The goal of the Concrete Alliance is to educate politicians, developers, architects, engineers, insurers, and the general public about the safety benefits that a cast-in-place reinforced concrete building offers. A concrete structure has long been recognized for its unsurpassed strength and fire safety. Reinforced concrete is the only material of choice for protecting people and equipment, especially with the daily threat of terrorist attacks. The terminology of a concrete core is repeatedly sited by distinguished members of building code committees and structural safety studies as the key ingredient to improve fire evacuation and rescue. Nevertheless, the best solution incorporates a concrete core within a cast in place reinforce concrete structure.

Concrete is made in the boroughs of New York, in plants that employ New Yorkers, a product delivered by New Yorkers, and erected by New Yorkers. It is not a product that requires importing from Europe or Asia. A concrete job is sixty-five (65%) labor intensive, which would multiply the expected taxes and revenues that the state and city would reap. Union contractors exhibit speed, skill, and flexibility on a concrete job, as demonstrated in our two-day cycle video (Click on Virtual Tour above). Concrete offers structural strength, which produces a higher degree of occupant safety for the public and the future occupants.

The safety of a family member or a loved one, at home or at work, should not be compromised due to initial short term construction savings or a closed minded developer. Just as you demand from the manufacturers that the foods you eat are healthier, the car seat your child is belted into is secure, so must you demand from the developers that the structure of a building they construct, and your family members occupy, be built safer with concrete.

Please contact us to verify if your building or a building being proposed or erected in your neighborhood is cast in place reinforced concrete. We welcome new members who recognize that the Concrete Alliance would be an asset to their organization. The Alliance meets the first Tuesday of each month to summarize the sites that are designated to be built cast-in-place reinforced concrete and prioritize the organizations efforts to educate the developers, architects, engineers, politicians, and community groups involved with any proposed construction yet to be designated concrete. The Concrete Alliance staff is available for speaking engagements.

Please contact Linda Amer at 212.575.4829 or e-mail the Alliance, if you have any questions or to offer assistance. Thank you.
